The name Gouvia derives from the fish, according to older villagers, called “kokovioi” which were the main species in the region (kokovioi -> govioi -> gouvioi -> Gouvia). In Gouvia there are still ruins of a Venetian naval station indicating the rich history of this small fishing village. Nowadays, the main marina of Corfu is located in Gouvia as well with more than 900 yachts per year.
